My research aims to explore how digital fabrication technologies can affect the subjective experiences of spaces in architecture. These subjective experiences, or embodied encounters, can be elicited by the interface of perceptual body interactions within a designed environment. In this sense the body becomes the ‘locus of perception,’ conscious reflection, and the storing and processing of sensory responses as outlined by Juhani Pallamsaa in his book: ‘The Eyes of the Skin.’
I will investigate this concept of experiencing multi-sensory thresholds in architecture through an arts-informed research process. Essentially the praxis of this project will oscillate between research into the theory of phenomenology in architecture, creative practice methodologies: which will include experimenting with the manufacturing capacities of digital fabrication technologies (CNC Routing, Laser Cutting and 3D printing machines), and constant reflexivity of these interrelated processes of qualitative research.
My goal is to digitally design and manufacture a series of models to mirror the twelve assumptions outlined by Pallasma (2012) that express the significance of hapticity in our understanding of tangible and non-tangible modes of interaction within designed environments that arise from embodied spatial experiences in architecture. The value of this research is imperative towards enriching the inherent cultural construct of designing and engaging with multi-sensory thresholds in architecture by exploiting the emerging capabilities of the progressive digital movement in all stages of the design process. The value of these possibilities should compel the individual to intrinsically construct a sensual appreciation for digitally designed spaces in architecture in which they are able to experience or develop a meaningful interaction within a designed environment.
Let the Journey begin...!
