My research question is concerned with objectifying the significance of metaphysical encounters in digitally-derived architecture by symbolising the body as the “locus of perception” and conscious reflection. This transformative process – concerning the physical, sensory and cognitive domains – provides limitless potentials in the parameters of interface between the body and a designed environment, begging the question:

Can Digitally Derived Architecture Elicit Multi-Sensory Responses?

RESEARCH AIM:

This project aims to explore the potentials of digitally fabricated architecture and its link to the theory of spatial experiences through phenomenological research and creative practice. The findings from this arts-informed practice-based research project will raise awareness of the progressive digital culture in architecture and its capacity to elicit multi-sensory responses from individuals who experience the spatial qualities of a digitally designed environment. Additionally, the results from this research could enhance the recognition of the transformation process of design and making in architecture as it emphasizes the significance of collaboration between idea generation and product manufacturing to realise final design solutions.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES:

There are two main objectives of this research:

  1. To develop a series of digitally fabricated architecture installations that have been designed and manufactured using computer technologies.

  2. These purpose of these installations is to mirror twelve assumptions outlined by Pallasmaa (2012) which highlight the significance of hapticity in our understanding of tangible and non-tangible modes of interaction within designed environments.

The value of this research is imperative towards enriching the inherent cultural construct of designing and engaging with multi-sensory thresholds in architecture by exploiting the emerging capabilities of the progressive digital movement in all stages of the design process – beginning with the conceptualisation of an idea realising it through digital technologies. These findings should compel the individual to intrinsically construct a sensual appreciation for digitally designed spaces in architecture in which they are able to experience through perceptual bodily dimensions that yield expressive subjective encounters within a designed environment.

I am excited to pursue this interest of mine, which is an important philosophical concept I have been trying to grasp since my first year of architecture. I am expecting to develop a mature sense of awareness regarding the critical understanding of space in architecture, and also strengthen my sensibility of how I design forms that shape space in architecture.
